SSC CGL Exam Pattern: Exam Duration, No. of Questions

SSC CGL Exam Pattern: Staff Selection Commission (SSC) is going to conduct CGL exam in the month of August tentatively. Candidates, who are planning to appear in upcoming CGL entrance examination, must check the examination pattern for better preparation. Last year, the conducting authority i.e. SSC has made some changes in the exam scheme of SSC CGL Tier 1. As per the officials exam timings of CGL Tier- 1 exam has been reduced from 75 minutes to 60 minutes from the year 2021. Except this, no other major change in the SSC CGL tiers has been made. The exam pattern of SSC CGL will give the information about the number of sections, mode of exam, total number of questions/marks, exam duration and marking scheme.

The entrance test of SSC CGL will be held in four tiers i.e. Tier I, tier II, tier III and tier IV. As the per exam pattern of SSC CGL, Tier I and II will be held online including objective type questions while Tier III will be a descriptive test to be organized in pen and paper mode. The Tier IV of SSC CGL is Computer Proficiency Skill test /Document Verification. CGL Tier-1 qualified applicants will be able to appear for the CGL Tier-2 and those who will qualify the Tier-2 will be eligible for Tier-3 exam.

The SSC CGL merit list will be prepared on the basis of candidate’s overall performance in Tier I, II and III. Candidates are advised to go through the exam pattern thoroughly as it will give them a better direction for exam preparation. The details of SSC CGL exam pattern are given below:

SSC CGL Exam Pattern

The entrance examination will include 4 tiers as indicated below:

  • Tier-1: Written Examination (Objective Type questions) – 200 Marks
  • Tier-2: Written Examination (Objective Type questions) – each paper carries 200 marks
  • Tier-3: Written Examination (Descriptive in nature)- 100 Marks
  • Tier-4: Computer Test / Skill Test (wherever applicable)

SSC CGL Tier- I Exam Pattern

  • The exam will be held in online mode (computer based test)
  • The Tier – I will include questions from four parts i.e. General Awareness, General Intelligence & Reasoning, English Comprehension and Quantitative Aptitude.
  • Each section will consist of 25 questions of 50 marks.
  • The exam will contain a total of 200 marks.
  • For each correct answer 2 marks will be rewarded.
  • The time duration of the exam will be 1 hour i.e. 60 minutes.
  • There will be negative marking of 1/2 mark for each incorrect answer

SSC CGL Tier II Exam Pattern

  • Exam will be conducted online mode and contain objective type questions
  • There will be 4 papers i.e. Paper- 1 (Quantitative Ability), Paper-2 (English Language and Comprehension), Paper-3 (Statistics) and Paper-4 (Finance and Economics).
  • Paper 1 and 2 is must to attempt for all posts and Paper-3 is only for the post of “Statistical Investigator Grade- II” & “Compiler” and Paper- 4 is held only for the “Assistant Audit Officer” post.
  • Each paper will carry 200 marks.
  • Duration of exam will be 2 hours for each paper.
  • There will be the provision of negative marking of 0.50 mark for each wrong answer in Paper-1, Paper-3 & Paper-4 while for (paper- 2) 1/4 marks will be deducted for each incorrect response.

SSC CGL Tier III Exam Pattern

  • It is a descriptive type test and will be organized in offline.
  • Essay / Letter / Précis / Application Writing will be done in the exam.
  • Exam carries a total of 100 marks to be completed in 60 minutes (for “VH” and “Cerebral Palsy” candidates the exam duration will be 80 minutes).
  • The passing marks in Tier-III would be 33%.
  • The paper will be held in Hindi and English languages.
  • The questions will be asked from 10+2 standard

SSC CGL Tier IV Exam Pattern

  • The SSC CGL Exam Pattern tier – 4 will be a Data Entry Skill Test (DEST) /Computer Proficiency Test (CPT).
  • It will be of qualifying nature.
  • The DEST will be held for the post of Tax Assistants (Central Excise and Income Tax) while CPT will be organized for the post of Assistant Section Officer of CSS.
  • The tier 4 will be conducted in online mode.
  • In Data Entry Speed Test (DEST), candidates are needed to type at 8,000 (eight thousand) Key Depression per hour.
  • The authority will be organized Computer Proficiency Test (CPT) comprising of three modules namely Spread Sheet, Word Processing and Generation of Slides.
